Hurricane Ike's Landfall Forecast Between Corpus Christi, Galveston
A weak cold front should set off scattered showers and thunderstorms in the area Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The week's major weather event is Hurricane Ike.
Sunday afternoon, he was 75 miles north-northeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, moving westward at 14 mph, and with peak winds of 120 mph.
The storm is forecast to move westward up the north coast of Cuba Monday into Tuesday, and then emerge over the Gulf of Mexico.
The track forecast carries him west-northwestward across the Gulf, reaching a point about 175 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi river Friday morning with eventual landfall likely to be some time Saturday along the Texas coast.
Where Ike makes landfall and how soon he makes his northward and then northeastward curve will determine his effect on east Texas weather.
The range of landfall sites Sunday had shifted to between Galveston and Corpus Christi.
East Texas can probably expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, along with increasingly windy conditions after Saturday night.
Sunday's temperatures ran a couple of degrees warmer than Saturday's, and still about 4 degrees below normal.
Monday's readings should run near normal, with slightly below normal temperatures.
