September 3: Empty Gesture
It took the threat of another hurricane coming into New Orleans, still unrepaired three years after Katrina, to make the Republicans pull back on their partying. What is it going to take to make them come to grips with the nation’s problems of abominable health care, poor public education, an unregulated market economy that has brought us to the brink of financial meltdown, the wholesale exodus of American jobs overseas and love for military adventurism that has cost the lives of our bravest and best and bankrupted us for generations to come?
Republicans and Democrats alike over the last 48 years have proven their aptitude for going through the motions of looking good, but have failed abysmally at doing anything of substance. I’m not holding my breath on this one, either.
