Gustav's Effect On East Texas Minimal
Decaying Hurricane Gustav had a far less adverse effect on East Texas than had been forecast.
Through 7 p.m., the city had picked up a storm total of 0.69 inch.
The city's highest wind gust was 28 mph occurring once Monday afternoon and again Tuesday afternoon.
Locations in East Texas mostly received an inch of rain or less from Gustav Tuesday. The exception is in the tier of counties along the Louisiana border, where amounts approaching two inches were common.
At 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, Tropical Depression Gustav's remnant was centered about 35 miles north of Shreveport, with maximum winds of 20 mph with higher gusts, and a north-northwestward movement at 8 mph, with a forecast turn to the north and then northeast over the next day or so. His northeastward shift should accelerate late Wednesday. This position was 95 miles east-northeast of Tyler.
Tuesday's temperatures held in the 70s where clouds and rain were present, but climbed into the lower 90s across the southwest and west.
These temperatures were about 5 degrees below normal. Slight warming is expected with less cloud cover and rain Wednesday, but temperatures should hold slightly below normal through Friday.
Tyler's highest sustaining wind Tuesday was northwesterly at 22 mph, with a peak gust of 28 mph, and an average velocity of 15.7 mph. Westerly winds in the 10-15 mph range are likely Wednesday, becoming northerly Thursday. Monday's average wind velocity was 10.2 mph.
Tuesday's average relative humidity was 82 percent, with lower values likely over the next few days. Monday's average was 67 percent.
Tyler's high temperature of 79 came at 1:41 a.m., with the day's low of 73 at 5:16 a.m.
