Game Wardens Form Storm Strike Team
A "strike team" of game wardens and other Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel on Monday were in Tyler to be deployed in response to Hurricane Gustav.

Statewide, more than 230 game wardens and their equipment are in position to move, according to information from the state.

Strike teams of 50, including game wardens, supervisors, radio technicians, GIS teams and boat mates, have been assigned trucks, boats and fuel trailers.

Other Gustav-related notes from the area:

Some College Classes Moved Or Canceled

The center is housing about 225 patients from three evacuated nursing home facilities.

Credit and continuing education dance classes will instead be held in Wise Cultural Arts as scheduled. Swimming and aquatic exercise courses are canceled. Other changes are pending.

Students can check the TJC Web site, www.tjc.edu, or call the 800-687-5680 today to get changes.

Tips For Livestock
Gustav could flood low areas of East Texas. Livestock owners can take precautions to minimize losses.

Dr. Jason Cleere, Texas AgriLife Extension Service beef cattle specialist, says livestock owners should:

  • Get animals to high ground
  • Avoid trapping animals in barns
  • Make sure trailers used to move animals have good tires and flooring
  • Pick up debris that might become a hazard in high winds
  • Make sure adequate feed is on hand.
