JACKSONVILLE -- Jacksonville residents can now get online and see maps that show them who their City Council district representative is or where their property line goes.
It's all part of the city's new Geographic Information Systems interactive maps, which can be found at http://maps.jacksonvilletx.org.
City Manager Mo Raissi said the maps came online Aug. 21 after about two years of planning.
"It took a lot of cooperation between city departments and other entities," said GIS Coordinator Kenneth Doman.
Maps for viewing include planning, utilities, street lights, and voting.
Raissi said the interactive maps will be beneficial for residents and city employees.
For example, it will be easier for the Water and Sewer Utilities Department to know where sewer lines exist, he said.
Raissi also mentioned that the fire department is able to locate where a fire hydrant is and see the size of water lines.
As far as residents, he said someone living in the city can see their own property lines and someone moving to the city can view a property before they buy it and build on the site.
"You don't have to go to the appraisal district to see where your property line is," Raissi added.
He said business owners can look at zoning to find out where they would be able to build their store.
The city has spent about $70,000 on the project, including the purchase of equipment and hiring a consultant, Raissi said.
But there will still be work in the future.
Raissi said they are working on clearing up the images to the point where someone could even see an object sitting in their own yard.

He also noted that they will be able to add to the maps as needed.
Doman said a genealogy group went to a city cemetery and is helping with a map where someone could find where their loved one is buried.
