Bill Marshall to Address Smith County Historical Society Sept. 2
Bill Marshall will be the guest speaker at the Sept. 2 meeting of the Smith County Historical Society, to be held at 7 p.m in the second-floor Payne Auditorium of the Carnegie History Center, 125 S. College Ave., Tyler.
Marshall's topic will be the first female professional photographer in Tyler, Mary Edwards, who operated Edwards Studio in the Citizens Bank building from the mid-1930s through the early 1940s, SCHS spokesman Robert Reed said.
"After marrying, she opened the Mary Marshall Studio on West Cochran in 1945. Though officially retired in 1998, she continued her profession on a lesser scale until her death," Reed said.
"Bill, the son of Mary Marshall, worked for Tyler Pipe for 32 years and for Unique Industrial Products for 10 years. He is now 'semi-retired.' Besides sharing his memories of his mother's business, Bill will also bring some of her equipment to display," Reed said.
The Carnegie History Cen-ter is the Smith County Historical Society's museum and archives. The society meetings are always free and open to members, their guests and interested members of the public.
Society publications and photographs will also be available for purchase at the meeting. For more information, call 903-592-5993.
