Know Rules Before Taking To The Field
Dove season opens the door on fall and winter hunting seasons. It is the time when hunters, who will hunt only a day or two during the year, will meet up with those weekend warriors who go as often as possible.

Dove hunting may be the simplest and most affordable season for Texas hunters. On the other hand, there are rules that need to be followed. Scott Vaca, assistant chief of wildlife enforcement with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Law Enforcement Division, offered these reminders for dove hunters statewide.

  • All hunters, regardless of age, need a hunting license.

  • Hunters 17 and over need a state migratory game bird stamp endorsement to hunt dove.

  • Hunters are required to be HIP certified to hunt dove. This should be done when purchasing license.

  • Hunters born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 are required to have completed Hunter Education, or purchase a "Hunter Education Deferral" and be accompanied while dove hunting.

  • Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Check local newspaper for official sunset time in your hunting area.

  • Check pump and semi-automatic shotguns to make sure they are properly plugged and incapable of holding more than three shells.

  • The possession limit on the first day of the season is the daily bag limit.

  • The possession limit after the first day of the season is twice the daily bag limit.

  • The daily bag limit is per day, not one bag limit in the morning and one in the evening.

  • Group hunting is not allowed. Each hunter must maintain his separate game bag.

  • It is unlawful to hunt from a vehicle, including hunting from the tailgate/bed of a truck; paraplegics and single/double leg amputees may hunt from a stationary vehicle.

  • Hunters are responsible for knowing whether a hunting area is baited or not.

  • All dove not in the immediate possession of the person who killed them must be tagged with a wildlife resource document, which is available in the department's Outdoor Annual.

  • The North Zone daily bag limit is 15 dove.

  • The Central and South zones daily bag limit is 12 dove.
