Shelby Surls Wins American Paint Horse Association World Championship
FORT WORTH — Local Paint Horse youth competitor Shelby Surls of Athens, captured a World Championship title recently at the 2008 World Championship Paint Horse Show. The show, held in Fort Worth, Texas, June 21 through July 5, is the American Paint Horse Association’s (APHA) premier event.
Surls captured the Championship in Youth Barrel Racing 14-18 showing Ima Dancin Fantasy, a 13-year-old gelding. In the class, competitors are timed as they complete a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. Surls bested a field of 19 for the win.
Youth are classified as competitors aged 18 and under, who earn points by showing their own horse or a horse owned by a family member.
About the World Show and the American Paint Horse Association
The World Championship Paint Horse Show is the largest gathering of Paint Horses on the planet. For two weeks, competitors and spectators witnessed nearly 2,000 horses competing in 187 events that showcased the talents of each horse and rider. The event is held annually at Will Rogers Memorial Center located in Fort Worth’s cultural district.
Winning a World Championship means a particular horse and rider are recognized as the best Paint Horse team in the world in a particular event. Total prizes and payouts totaled more than $400,000.
APHA was founded 46 years ago and has since registered nearly 1 million American Paint Horses. The association currently serves more than 93,000 active members around the world. APHA works not only to record Paint Horse pedigrees, but also to preserve and promote the history, breeding, training, racing, showing, sales and enjoyment of American Paint Horses.
