Redskins Draft Pick Malcolm Kelly Receives Insight in Liberia
Malcolm Kelly of Longview, former standout receiver at the University of Oklahoma and second round draft pick of the Washington Redskins, led a group of private citizens to the African Nation of Liberia July 5-10 on behalf of Mercy Ships of Garden Valley.

The “Vision Trip” was designed to shed light on medical relief efforts the global charity provides, as Liberians continue to improve health and well-being standards in Liberia.

During the week-long trip, the group visited with staff on the Mercy Ships’ flagship, Africa Mercy. The vessel is the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship and currently docked in the port city of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. The group viewed surgeries in one of the Africa Mercy’s state-of-the-art surgical suites and toured parts of the country recovering from years of civil war.

Kelly met with Liberian officials, including President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and spent a day working out with members of the 2008 Liberian Olympic Team. He enlisted the help of his personal trainer to help train the Liberian athletes and generate support for sports in Liberia.

Mercy Ships is a global charity that has operated hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. A crew of both professional medical and non-medical volunteers serves all people without regard for race, gender, or religion. Medical volunteers are scheduled to perform more than 7000 medical procedures during their 2008 field service.

“I’m honored and humbled to play a small part in this effort to bring both hope and healing to the people of Liberia,” Kelly said. “As I’ve come to know the history and spirit of the Liberian people through Mercy Ships, I feel a real connection to the country. I admire the way they are rebuilding their future and I want to do everything I can to help.”
